A short post to start brainstorming about which basic technical troubleshooting skills every helpdesk person should have.

Basic Networking Skills

DNS, ping, VLAN and trace-route.

Basic System Administration Skills

File permissions on both Windows and Linux, access levels, network card configurations, domain controllers and LDAP.

Basic Database Administration Skills

Helpdesk staff should be able to perform basic SELECT queries

Basic Scripting Skills

Powershell and some form of Unix Shell

Basic Virtualisation Skills

Creating VMWare and HYper-V VMs and binding them to networks

Basic EMail Server Skills

Be able to test email server connectivity, MXtoolbox
